Cabot defines an environmental non-conformance event as a reportable spill or release, a Notice of Violation, a public complaint or certain permit deviations. We incorporate environmental performance as a critical component of operational excellence and carefully monitor environmental performance events in those three areas that occur at our facilities. Proudly, we have decreased our number of environmental performance events by more than 65% over the past three years.

A key component of that success in reducing our environmental performance events is Cabot's investment of significant capital in its facilities' process equipment and infrastructure. This investment helps us maintain regulatory compliance, increase our energy efficiency, and minimize our impact on the environment.

Examples of our recent environmental capital investments are:

  • installation of a new, state-of-the-art boiler and turbogenerator at our Mauá, Brasil carbon black facility to produce steam and electricity for our own use as well as neighboring facilities;
  • replacement of air pollution control equipment at four facilities to comply with new environmental regulations;

  • replacement of control valves at our Shanghai, China carbon black facility to reduce fugitive air emissions; and

  • upgrades to underground wastewater piping networks at our carbon black facilities in Botlek, Netherlands and Ravenna, Italy to eliminate potential leaks and prevent groundwater infiltration.
