Whether producing carbon black or fumed silica, formulating inkjet dispersions, or extracting cesium ore, water is an essential element to our manufacturing operations. In 2010, Cabot facilities withdrew 22.1 million cubic meters of water, with 79% used by our carbon black manufacturing facilities. Total water usage in 2010 increased 7% from 2009. At the same time, our water intensity (amount of water used per metric ton of product produced) declined 6%, indicating a more efficient use of water in our production processes. Cabot continues to evaluate other opportunities to conserve water and lessen our water footprint.
